Get Ready!

There is no assigned talk to read this week, but we would like to encourage you to spend some time preparing yourself for conference this weekend.

Perhaps you might like to read through some of your favorite talks from last General Conference.

Or you could make a list of questions that you would like to receive answers to and pray daily that you will receive inspiration concerning them.

There are lots of ideas online on how to make conference a more meaningful experience. Here is a great link to a list of many of them.

I hope you are all as excited for the upcoming conference as I am !

The Joy of Redeeming the Dead

If you would like to read Elder Scott's talk or follow along with the words while watching the video go here.

My paternal grandmother died long before I was born.  Following her death, my grandpa married her younger sister Ruby.  I was blessed to have Aunt Ruby, in the role of grandma, in my life.  She was one of the most Christ-like individuals I have ever known.

My Aunt Ruby truly loved family history.  Frequently she would take the bus from Payson, Utah and travel to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City to work on her genealogy.  She would leave early and return home late.  I remember her telling us stories of how she searched the records, sometimes for numerous weeks, to find the elusive name of just one ancestor and the joy she felt when that individual was finally found.

Today when I log into Family Search and am presented with a pedigree chart filled with the names of my progenitors, all with their temple work completed, my heart is once again filled with a deep love for Aunt Ruby, and for my Aunt Rose, her niece and step-daughter, and for my own mother.  All women who spent countless hours compiling information for our ancestors' benefit and for my benefit as well.  How grateful I am to each of them and to all my other relatives who have contributed to this sacred work.

Family history research is so much easier today than it was in my Aunt Ruby's lifetime.  I sometimes feel guilty at how quickly and simply I can locate an ancestor's name in the vast array of computerized records that are now available to me in the convenience of my own home.  However, I should feel gratitude, not guilt, for this great blessing.  I join with Elder Scott's beloved wife, Jeanene, in saying "it is truly the Lord's work and He is directing it."

Elder Scott states that "temple and family history work is one work divided into two parts" and then quotes President Howard W. Hunter when he says,

"...there are many members of the Church who have only limited access to the temples.  They do the best they can.  They pursue family history research and have the temple ordinance work done by others. Conversely, there are some members who engage in temple work but fail to do family history research on their own family lines.  Although they perform a divine service in assisting others, they lose a blessing by not seeking their own kindred dead as divinely directed by latter-day prophets... I have learned that those who engage in family history research and then perform the temple ordinance work to those whose names they have found will know the additional joy of receiving both halves of the blessing."

Elder Scott goes on to say,

"Father in Heaven wants each of us to receive both parts of the blessing of this vital vicarious work.  He has led others to show us how to quality.  It is up to you and me to claim those blessings."

I love to attend the temple and perform saving ordinances for the dead.  I also love participating in family history work through the Family Search indexing program.  My challenge now is to combine my two loves, by using the Family Search indexes to locate my family members who are still missing and then by performing their work for them - connecting and enjoying, even more fully, both halves of the blessing.

I feel that this next quote was given specifically for me,

"Any work you do in the temple is time well spent, but receiving ordinances vicariously for one of your own ancestors will make the time in the temple more sacred, and even greater blessings will be received.  The First Presidency has declared, 'Our preeminent obligation is to seek out and identify our own ancestors.'".

I loved the story of the young man in Russia who gave up his computer game playing in order to have time to do his family history work.  He discovered that "Genealogical work is something that we can do here on earth, and it will remain in heaven"  and he didn't really miss the computer games.

What a great guide for life - Is this activity something that will have merit in the eternities?

I'll end with Elder Scott's challenge,

"But what about you?  Have you prayed about your own ancestors' work?  Set aside those things in your life that don't really matter.  Decide to do something that will have eternal consequences."

Followed by his promise,

"This work is a spiritual work, a monumental effort of cooperation on both sides of the veil, where help is given in both directions.  Anywhere you are in the world, with prayer, faith, determination, diligence, and some sacrifice, you can make a powerful contribution.

Begin now.

I promise you that the Lord will help you find a way.

And it will make you feel wonderful."
